Amazon Launches Four New Fire HD 8 Tablets for 2022

This year saw the release of the All-New Fire 7 tablets, but the HD 8 line hasn't had an upgrade since 2020.

The good news is that that's just changed and Amazon has now announced FOUR HD 8 new models for 2022.

Here's a look at what's new with each device...

The All-New Fire HD 8

The twelfth generation of the Fire HD 8 is here. Whilst the changes don't appear to be huge, there are a few little improvements that will make this even more fun to use than its predecessor!

The main one is an increase in speed, thanks to an upgrade to a hexa-core processor from a quad-core. Amazon promises this tablet will be 30% faster than the previous version.

The 2022 Fire HD 8 is also being billed as 'lighter and thinner' than its predecessor. Well, that's true enough - but not by much.

The 2020 Fire HD 8 weighed 12.52 ounces - the new version weighs 11.88 ounces.

The 2020 Fire HD 8 measured 7.95 x 5.39 x 0.38 inches - the new version measures  7.94 by 5.4 by 0.37 inches.

To be honest, I don't think we'll be noticing much of a difference there!

At 2 GB RAM, the memory stays the same (although you get more with the All-New Fire HD 8 Plus - see below).

Storage options remain the same, too. You can choose between 32 GB or 64 GB of built-in storage,  which can be expanded with a microSD card by up to 1 TB.

But there are some other changes, including:

  • Battery life - this has increased by 1 hour, from 12 to 13 hours. Like its predessor, though, it still takes 5 hours to fully charge with the 5W power adapter and USB-C cable (inlcuded). It can support up to 15W charging, but you'd need to purchase a separate charger for that.

  • The screen - this is made of a tougher aluminosilicate glass that Amazon claims makes the device twice as durable as the Apple iPad mini (2021).

  • Split screen feature - this was previously available only on the Fire HD 10 and it's a feature I love. It allows you to run 2 apps side by side, or to look something up online whilst simultaneously enjoying your favorite show.

  • Personalized display sizes - choose to magnify all elements on the screen if you are visually impaired, or reduce their size to give you extra on-screen space to do more on the display.

  • Tap to Alexa - this features allows you to interact with Alexa via touch instead of voice commands. You can also pair your device with a supporting Bluetooth switch or use text-to-speech to have the commands spoken for you. These are super-useful improvements for anyone with speech difficulties.

  • The price - the new model is $10 more expensive than the 10th generation tablet.

Accessories for Fire HD 8 (12th Generation)

Here's a list of useful accessories available for the 12th generation Fire HD 8 tablet - all links take you straight to Amazon:

The All-New Fire HD 8 Plus

The 'Plus' is essentially the premium version of the Fire HD 8. It offers everything you get with the basic version plus some nice enhancements.

At the time of writing, it is $20 more expensive than the base version - a relatively small price to pay (if you can afford it) considering the extra features.

These include:

  •  'Easy charging' USB-C charger that promises to fully charge your device in 3 hours - an hour faster than the previous version of the HD 8 Plus and 2 hours faster than the new base model. A 9W power adapter is included.

  • Wireless charging capabilities using the Wireless Charging Dock for Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus. This is the same version of the charging dock that worked with the 2020 Fire HD 8 Plus - so if you have that version, the good news is you won't need a new dock!

  • Compatibility with other with Qi-certified wireless chargers (Amazon)

  • 3 GB RAM (compared with only 2 GB on the base model). This provides a much more seamless experience when switching from one app to another.

  • Sharper images, thanks to the improved 5-megapixel rear-facing camera (the previous version of the Fire HD 8 Plus had 2-megapixel camera, as does the base version).

The bad news? The All New Fire HD 8 Plus is (at the time of writing) $30 more expensive than its predecessor.

All-new Fire HD 8 Kids Editions

There are still 2 versions of the Kids' Fire tablets.

The All-New Fire HD 8 Kids is built for kids ages 3-7, whilst the The All-New Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is designed for kids aged 6-12.

Just like the adult versions, Amazon promises that these new versions will be 30% faster and will offer up to 13 hours of battery life.

One year of Amazon Kids+ is included with both models, which gives your children access to appropriate books, videos, audio books, games and apps.

With the Pro version, kids also have access to a digital store where they can purchase Ebooks and apps (with parental permission).

The Kids version still comes with a  2 year guarantee, which is a real bonus and gives you a lot more confidence to buy.

And for the first time, you can buy the All-New Fire HD 8 Kids in a case with a Disney design (Mickey Mouse or Disney Princess), although that will cost you $10 extra.
