It's that exciting time of year again, Fire Friends, when Amazon adds some new devices to the family of Fire tablets.
This year it's the turn of the Fire HD 10 to receive a makeover and the new devices for 2021 are (drum roll)...
There are also a couple of cool Fire HD 10 Productivity Bundles that - for the first time - make the Fire tablet a very viable alternative to a laptop.
Here's a look at what's new with each device...
The eleventh generation has arrived and the all-new Fire HD 10 is basically a refresh of its predecessor (released in 2019).
As before, it has a 10.1 inch screen size but the new version is both lighter and slimmer than before.
Here's the rest of what's changed.
One thing that HASN'T changed (yet) is the price :)
You still get up to 12 hours of battery life, Dolby Atmos sound and up to 1 TB storage with the microSD card slot. Storage options remain at 32 GB and 64 GB.
The front-facing camera is landscape oriented, so it's ideal for widescreen video calls and Zoom meetings!
The Fire HD 10 Plus is a brand new device.
It only differs from the standard all-new Fire HD 10 in a few ways, but this is reflected in the price. At the time of writing, it is only $30 more expensive.
Whilst the chipset and options for internal storage remain the same, the Fire HD 10 Plus has an impressive 4 GB RAM - more than the standard, all-new HD 10 and twice as much as its 2019 predecessor!
This will be especially interesting if you play a lot of games - in fact, Amazon is describing this tablet as its 'most powerful 10 inch tablet ever'.
Other features include
The 2021 Fire HD 10 Plus uses the Qi wireless powering standard, so it will work with most charging docks.
However, the Wireless Charging Dock for Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus - made by Anker - was designed specifically for this device. You can dock your tablet in portrait or landscape mode, even if it is in a case (up to 5mm thick).
The benefit of using the dock - beside wireless charging - is that it allows you to use your tablet like an Echo Show. You can ask Alexa for weather updates, recipes etc, and see and hear your results from across the room.
You can either purchase the dock separately or buy the dock and the tablet together at Amazon as a bundle.
If you want your Fire to replace your laptop, Amazon can help make that happen with its new Productivity Bundles.
The bundles are available for either the All-New Fire HD 10 or the All-New Fire HD 10 Plus.
The bundle includes a detachable case that allows you to adjust the screen viewing angles and a built-in keyboard.
But what makes it REALLY interesting is the 12 month Microsoft 365 Personal Subscription that goes with it, giving you access to a suite of premium Office apps like Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint - plus 1 TB of OneDrive cloud storage - for up to 5 compatible devices.
The keyboard has an extra long life battery, giving up to 400 hours use per charge, and will stay charged in standby mode for up to 365 days.
The Kids Edition - aimed at children between 3 and 7 years old - has had a refresh, with 50% more RAM than before and an improved rear-facing camera.
Your purchase still includes one year of Amazon Kids+, which allows your little ones to access to suitable books, videos, audio books, games and apps.
The Kids version still comes with a 2 year guarantee, which is an excellent bonus and allows you to buy with a lot more confidence.
Another brand new addition to the Fire family, the Kids Pro tablets are designed for older children, aged from 6 to 12.
These are designed to look and feel more like the adult versions of the Fire but have smaller storage options (16 GB and 32 GB).
Like the original Kids Tablets, they come with a 1 year subscription to Amazon Kids+, but Pro tablets also include access to a digital store, where children can request apps. It is then up to you as a parent to approve their downloads and purchases (or not!).
The web browser is built to filter out inappropriate sites - and the good news is that this tablet, like the one designed for younger children, also has a 2 year warranty.
If you have an older Kindle Fire and want to upgrade to the latest version, you may have the option of trading it in.
See my article about the Amazon Trade-In Program for Fire Tablets to learn more.
Then consider buying a refurbished Fire tablet through the Amazon Renewed program. It comes with the same limited warranties as a brand new device!
Amazon makes it pretty easy to transfer to transfer content from your old Fire tablet when you upgrade. But it's important to realize that not EVERYTHING can be moved to your new device.
I'd love to hear your experiences with the 11th generation of the Fire HD 10.
If you order one of these new Fire tablets for 2021, please let me know what you think - good and bad - so I can share your experiences with other readers.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
I ♥ My Fire!
