Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein

My story starts with my reticence to buy a "Device". I am one of those old guys born in the Fifties who don't own a cell phone or a computer. I love the idea that no one can bug me when I'm away from the phone, and I don't think computers have been perfected yet. When you can just talk to a computer (like in Star Trek) and have it do whatever, I'll buy one.

Now the Kindle part. My wife owns two computers and a 4G smart phone and she is constantly trying to get me to buy one or the other and "get into the 21st century". She ended up buying me a Kindle Fire for my birthday. It was a BIG surprise!

My first thought was, "Well what am I going to do with this thing?" I asked around at work and it seemed that almost everyone had some type of Kindle. They all told me about being able to read books (I love books) and do all sorts of other stuff with it. I was skeptical, but I thought I would try it out.

I love the size of it (just like a book) and I am amazed at how many things I can do with it! I have over twenty books stored on my Kindle, and now have an E-mail account too.

I should have got one sooner. I love my Kindle Fire, and would not be with out it! I am learning (slowly) how to use all of its features and functions.

The learning curve is a little steep, but, 21st century here I come!

From a Stranger to a Kindle Fire Fan

Thanks Nilo, for sharing your personal Kindle Fire story with us! I love your title, "Stranger in a Strange Land," which instantly reminded me of Robert A. Heinlein's book of the same name so I had to grab a screen shot of the book on my Kindle Fire which I added to your story.

I personally didn't care for this book, although I read a ton of other books by Heinlein (he was my author pick in High School) that I did enjoy.

What are some of your favorite books and authors?

Thanks again for your submission and welcome to the world of the Kindle Fire, we're glad to have you here!

Nilo, you're not an "old guy"! I was born in the early 1940s... but I've embraced the computer age. I'm happy to see you've discovered the wonderful work of computers, and yes, the Kindle Fire IS a computer, albeit a computer with limited functionality... but with maximum portability!! I'm sure it'll do lots of stuff for you that you haven't dreamed of yet! ENJOY!!!!!
